How to feel safe in the streets

Protecting oneself in the street is important for everyone, regardless of gender. Here are a few tips that can help women enhance their personal safety. Share them with your daughters and friends! They are easy but very often we forget about them.

  1. Be aware of your surroundings: Stay alert and observant of what's happening around you. Avoid distractions like using your phone excessively or wearing headphones that may hinder your ability to hear potential threats.

  2. Trust your instincts: If you feel uncomfortable or sense danger, trust your intuition and take action. It's better to be cautious and proactive than to ignore your gut feelings.

  3. Walk confidently: Appear self-assured and project confidence when walking. Stand tall, maintain good posture, and make direct eye contact with others. This can deter potential attackers who may perceive you as an easy target.

  4. Stay in well-lit areas: Stick to well-lit streets and busy areas, particularly at night. Avoid poorly lit or isolated places that could make you vulnerable.

  5. Plan your routes: Whenever possible, plan your routes in advance and choose well-traveled and populated paths. Avoid alleys, dark corners, or areas with limited escape options.

  6. Maintain distance from strangers: Be cautious when approached by strangers, particularly in isolated or uncomfortable situations. Maintain a safe distance and avoid divulging personal information or engaging in unnecessary conversations.

  7. Inform others of your plans: Let a trusted friend or family member know your itinerary, especially if you're going to unfamiliar places or meeting someone new. Share your estimated arrival times and update them if plans change.

  8. Learn self-defence techniques: Taking self-defence classes can empower you with physical and mental skills to protect yourself. Techniques like basic strikes, blocks, and escape maneuvers can provide you with valuable tools in case of an emergency.
